The Ginevra portrait is Leonardo’s first serious attempt to solve the essential problem of portraiture: how to capture the character, the soul of the sitter. Leonardo’s solution is to employ a combination of three elements: the naturalism of the face; the movement of the body; and the psychological counterpoint of the hands.
