Study of defensive armament

For some of us, that may come as a shock that Leonardo designed weapons. By our 21st century standards, it’s impossible to reconcile the artist of such tender devotional paintings with the inventor of horrific machines of war. For Leonardo, however, both endeavors presented a scientific challenge of equal merit.

For him, calculating the trajectory of a cannon ball was not much different than studying the movement of rivers, or tracing the fine veins on the leaf of an oak.
