Madonna of the Carnation

In 1481, Leonardo received his first “big” commission, the one that had the potential of cementing his reputation as one of Florence’s most brilliant artists. That is the year when the Augustinian monks of San Donato a Scopeto, a wealthy monastery just outside Florence, commissioned an Adoration of the Magi on a vast scale. The panel was to be more than eight feet wide and seven feet tall.
