Ludovico “Il Moro” Sforza was Duke of Milan from 1494-1499, and along with his wife Beatrice d’ Este spent lavishly on the arts and sciences. Ludovico was Leonardo’s patron from 1482 to 1499, and commissioned him to paint portraits of at least two of his mistresses, Cecilia Gallerani and Lucrezia Crivelli. Ludovico was ousted by the French King Louis XII.
