Cesare Borgia, made famous by the “Borgias” TV series, was the illegitimate son of the Spanish Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, the later Pope Alexander VI, and his Italian mistress Vannozza dei Cattanei. Using French forces, Cesare conquered a number of cities across central Italy to expand the influence of the Papal States. Between 1502 and 1503, Leonardo served as his chief military architect and engineer. Exiled and imprisoned in Spain in 1504, Cesare later escaped but was killed in 1507 while fighting in Viana, Spain.
