Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti (1475-1564), Florentine sculptor, painter and architect, and Leonardo’s principal rival. At 13, he joined the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio as an apprentice, and soon became a protégé of the Medici family. In 1498, he was commissioned to create a statue of the Pietà, followed in 1501 by a commission to create a sculpture of David.
